I started the series with Australia because it is an accessible foreign country with wildly different and abundant flora and fauna. The topography and climate are quite unusual for Europeans and North Americans. Because English is the native language (sort of), traveling there is pleasant and easy. The only unnerving part is learning to drive on the left, and this is manageable after some practice
The DVD covers the SE portion of the continent. I’ve included 4 possible loop tours: two in New South Wales, one in Victoria, and one in Tasmania. The trips take from two to six weeks depending on how much time is spent exploring. Total DVD length is about an hour.
I chose Chile for my first South American adventure because it is one of the safest and most pristine countries on the continent. Although the language is Spanish, there are many who know a little English and some who know a lot. You will benefit from learning some Spanish before going.
It is a long, thin country bounded by the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Because there are so many transition zones in such a small distance east to west, Chile provides ecosystems for a diverse population of plants and animals. North to south is over 2500 miles: from the driest desert in the world to the ice fields of the south. The DVD shows where I went and what I saw. It can help you decide what part of the country you would like to visit. Total DVD time is 45 minutes.
Having lived in Colorado more years than I care to admit, I know it better than anywhere else in the world. The reason I moved here is because there is so much public land (over 30% of the state) supporting a variety of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and wildflowers...as well as the enchanting Rocky Mountains.
On the DVD I sprinkle in some historic background information as we travel around the state on four loop tours. You will learn where, when, and how to spot the state's abundant wildlife. Also included are 10 pages of information to read before you set out on your own Colorado adventure. Total length; one hour.
Costa Rica is a small gem of a tropical country. Smaller than West Virginia, it supports such an amazing quantity of plant, bird, and animal species, you will scarcely believe it. The location and topography are responsible for this diversity. There is a north to south mountainous spine full of tectonic activity, including seven active and many dormant volcanoes. The mountains drop off to the coastal plains of the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the Atlantic/Caribbean Sea on the east. Plus the flora and fauna of the North and South American continents overlap on the narrow isthmus of Central America providing an abundance matched nowhere else. Also credit a stable government and strong conservation ethic over many years for the preservation and protection of about 30% of the country's area. The benefits are obvious when comparing Costa Rica to the other Central American countries whose conservation policies have been far less stringent. The DVD will be at least an hour and cover the central portion, Guanacaste, and the south western area.
